Environmental and Social Management Systems (ESMSs)

An Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) is a set of policies, procedures, tools and internal capacity to identify and manage an organizations exposure to the environmental and social risks of its activities clients or investees.

On this background we utilize our knowledge and training on ISO 14000 (Environmental Management Systems) and those garnered from the development banks such as the World Bank and African Development Bank to help organizations especially those in the private sector, develop sound ESMSs.
Additionally, we understand the applicability of the World Bank’s Environmental and Social Standard (ESS) 9, and other Donor E&S Standards/Safeguards in ensuring private sector compliance with the preparation of ESMSs when dealing with financial institutions or intermediaries.

Environmental and Social Management Frameworks (ESMFs)

Our expertise also involves the preparation of ESMFs at stages where the full details of environmental and social risks and impacts of development projects are not known.

Environmental and Social Impacts Assessments (ESIAs) & Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs)

The identification of adverse environmental and social risks and impacts of proposed developments is best practice towards avoiding, reducing mitigating or compensating for such impacts. While our ESIAs address projects with risks and impacts that are widespread, have large magnitude, irreversible, long-term, direct and indirect, our ESMPs address risks and impacts that are localized, site-specific, short-term and reversible. We ensure applicability relevant E&S Standards as per the Donors’ E&S Requirements such as the World Banks Environmental and Social Standard (ESS) 1; Equator Principles (EP4, 2020), IFC Performance Standards, AfDB ISS, AFD E&S Framework etc.
Other Environmental and Social Assessment services we offer include:

  • Environmental and Social Assessment training and Capacity Building
  • Environmental and Social Auditing
  • Environmental and Social Due Diligence
  • Environmental and Social Risk Assessment
  • Environmental and Social Scoping
  • Environmental and Social Screening
  • Preliminary E&S Assessments
  • Sectoral Environmental and Social Assessments
  • Strategic Environmental and Social Assessments
  • Sustainability Reporting
  • Vulnerability Assessments

Air Pollution and GHGs Management Frameworks/Advisory

As development continues, production systems increase in activities and the dependence on fossil fuels for energy is still a present reality in cities, towns and rural areas around the world. To this end, our environmental team works towards understudying air pollution causes and the source-receptor-pathway so as to conduct appropriate studies, design control or mitigation measures and advisory. We undertake air quality measurement and monitoring; air dispersion modelling, GHG emissions inventory, framework and management plan development and advisory.

Clean Development Mechanism (CDM)

The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is one of the Flexible Mechanisms defined in the Kyoto Protocol (IPCC, 2007) that provides for emissions reduction projects which generate Certified Emission Reduction units (CERs) which may be traded in emissions trading schemes. In this regard, our experts provide advisory and Technical Assistance for countries with emission- reduction or emission-limitation commitment under the Kyoto Protocol (Annex B Party) to implement emission-reduction projects in developing countries.

Climate Change Vulnerability/Risk Assessments and REDD Plus Initiatives

At BioDoc we provide Technical Assistance in Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Strategies, Vulnerability Risk Assessment, aid and services. REDD+ is a voluntary climate change mitigation approach that has been developed by Parties to the UNFCCC. We also ensure the applicability of the World Bank’s Environmental and Social Standard (ESS)3 in pollution control and energy efficiency projects we are involved in.

Biodiversity Conservation

Biodiversity is both essential for our existence and intrinsically valuable in its own right. This is because biodiversity provides the fundamental building blocks for the many goods and services a healthy environment provides. These include things that are fundamental to our health, like clean air, fresh water and food products, as well as the many other products such as timber and fiber. Other important services provided by our biodiversity include recreational, cultural and spiritual nourishment that maintain our personal and social wellbeing. Looking after our biodiversity is therefore an important task for all people.

Contaminated Sites Assessment, Management and Remediation

Our services seek to utilize Best Environmental Practices (BEP), Best Available Technologies (BAT) and Global International Industry Practices in assisting our clients whether governments or private in identifying risks, source-receptor-pathways, technically appropriate and cost-effective options for remediating contaminated sites.

Waste Management

Our waste management services include conceptualization, framework preparation, management plans, waste risk assessments, advisory, capacity building and waste management treatment technologies and disposal option analysis. Our experience cuts across healthcare waste, municipal solid waste, hazardous waste, agricultural was, liquid waste, biodegradable waste etc.

  • Erosion and Watershed Management
  • Natural Hazards and Vulnerability Risks
  • Persistent Organic Pollutants Renewable Energy.
